Carol Nolan Urges Extension of Excise Duty Cut to Help Families
Deputy Carol Nolan urged the minister to extend the excise duty reduction on fuel, highlighting anxiety over rising fuel costs for motorists, farmers and hauliers. She asked the government to provide certainty to families, farmers and hauliers and noted contact from a haulier at Jarrah Highland in Leash.
Call for extension of excise duty reduction
Deputy Nolan asked the minister if the government will extend the excise duty reduction currently in place, saying the policy should be continued to give certainty to families, farmers and hauliers who face high fuel costs.
Concerns from hauliers and rural communities
She said hauliers cannot plan going forward and cited direct contact from a haulier at Jarrah Highland in Leash, stressing that hauliers provide much employment in rural Ireland where there are few opportunities.
Government response and Budget 2023
The minister replied that Budget 2023 included a total package of £11 billion, with £4 billion of that made up of one-off measures which took effect from the final quarter of last year. The minister said one of those measures related to a reduction in excise duty and that the matters will be discussed at government in the coming weeks.
Timeline for decision-making
The minister told the House that decisions will be made by government as a collective in the month of February and that the House will be advised accordingly.

Minister, as you know many families are grappling with the cost of living, particularly the cost of fuel, there is huge anxiety and concern over the fuel costs that motorists are paying, that farmers are paying and that hauliers also who cannot plan going forward are paying at present and I am asking you today if your government will extend the excise duty reduction that we currently have because we are hearing mixed messages from government and the government Green Party seem to be of a different opinion than yourselves it appears from what is going out in the media, but I am asking you here today to give certainty to families, to farmers and to hauliers in respect of this issue, I know that a haulier at Jarrah Highland in Leash has been in contact with me on that issue and they are very concerned, these hauliers provide much employment in rural Ireland where there is little or no opportunities, so we do need this extended and I call on you to do that. Thank you.
