Éamon Ó Cuív: Events sector may not reopen until next year

Éamon Ó Cuív warned that some businesses — particularly events businesses — may not be able to reopen until next year and that their reopening is wholly dependent on public health advice. He asked what the State will do to sustain those businesses through the period before normal activity resumes.

Events businesses facing delayed reopening

Éamon Ó Cuív noted that, while there has been talk of getting businesses going again, some sectors cannot resume operations by simple decree. The events business, by its nature, depends on gatherings and in many cases cannot reopen until health guidance allows large crowds.

Range of events affected

He highlighted everything from weddings to major music events, citing both large outdoor and indoor gatherings. He mentioned examples including music events in Croke Park and also referenced Patrick's Day Paris as emblematic of large-scale events that cannot proceed under current restrictions.

Dependence on health advice and need for support

Ó Cuív emphasised that the opening of events businesses is "totally dependent on health advice" and that sustaining these businesses during the interim will require deliberate measures. He argued that the sector is essential to the cultural and economic life that follows the return to a new normal.

Visibility of the sector's workforce

He pointed out that while musicians are often visible, many of the people who make events happen are not seen, underscoring the wider workforce at risk. He posed the question of what will be done for those businesses and workers while public health concerns continue to limit gatherings.
