Billy Kelleher: EU Must Hold US to Turnberry Agreement
Billy Kelleher, MEP, addressed Parliament urging the European Union to ensure the United States honours the Turnberry Agreement. He warned that President Trump's volatility makes firm EU enforcement essential to protect workers and small and medium sized businesses.
Why stability matters
Billy Kelleher set out how, a year ago, uncertainty and volatility across Europe left workers and small and medium sized businesses deeply concerned. He argued that the Turnberry Agreement, while not perfect, restored confidence by creating a framework of rules for trade and cooperation.
Message to the United States
Kelleher warned that President Trump has shown volatility and a tendency to make policy on the hoof, and that the European Union must now demonstrate a strong hand. He called on the United States to live up to its obligations under the Turnberry Agreement and said the EU will question any backtracking.

The MEP closed by urging implementation rather than rhetoric: the agreement's value depends on both sides honouring their commitments. Kelleher made clear that Parliament will hold parties to account if obligations are not met.

This time last year there was great uncertainty and volatility across Europe and grave concern by workers and small and medium sized businesses. And the Turnberry Agreement, while not perfect, certainly brought about stability in terms of at least giving confidence to business and workers that an agreement could be struck whereby we would play by certain rules. President Trump is volatile. He does make up policy on the hoof. But from a European perspective, we have to show that we're committed to signing up what we agreed and implementing it. I'd like to put on the record my deep appreciation to Karen Carlsborough, our new Shadow, for bringing a fair and fair perspective to the negotiations. And now, from now on, the European Union must show a very strong hand in ensuring that the United States lives up to its obligations under this particular agreement.
