Darragh O'Brien: Cabinet keeps fuel excise cuts, extends rebate

Darragh O'Brien: Cabinet keeps fuel excise cuts, extends rebate

Darragh O'Brien said Cabinet has decided to retain reductions in excise duty on diesel, petrol and green diesel and to extend the diesel rebate for hauliers to 30 September. The measures represent about
c255 million in relief aimed at lowering driving costs for businesses and households.

What was decided

Darragh O'Brien set out that Cabinet agreed today to keep the excise duty reductions in place across diesel, petrol and green diesel. In addition, the diesel rebate scheme for hauliers will continue at the 12.5 cent level until 30 September.

Who benefits

The announcement targets both businesses and households. Hauliers receive extended support through the rebate scheme, while the excise duty cuts reduce the direct cost of fuel for drivers using diesel, petrol or green diesel for work.

Financial impact and purpose

The package amounts to roughly
c255 million. O'Brien framed the measures as immediate relief to help lower the cost of driving and to ease pressure on sectors where fuel remains a significant expense.

Hello everyone, cost of fuel is still an issue for many people and for businesses across the country and that's why at Cabinet today we made a decision to keep the reductions in place on excise duty across diesel, across petrol and across green diesel as well. Furthermore we've extended the diesel rebate scheme for hauliers at the 12.5 cent level up to the 30th of September. So these are further supports to the tune of about €255 million that'll help businesses, that will help households as well in reducing the cost of driving, be using diesel, petrol or indeed green diesel for work.
