Gerard P. Craughwell Urges Attendance at July Commemorations
Gerard P. Craughwell urged people to attend the weekend of commemoration on 12 and 13 July, noting the Royal British Legion event at Island Bridge and the Irish commemoration the following day. He said he will attend as President of the Econic Rangers Association and a former member of the Royal Irish Rangers, and called for remembrance of those who died in the world wars and Korea while praising security services over a major drugs interception.
He highlighted the Royal British Legion's annual event at Island Bridge on 12 July and the Irish commemoration on Sunday 13 July. He said he will be there and encouraged others to attend.
He recalled that several thousand countrymen died during the First and Second World Wars and spoke of a recent visit to the Korean War cemetery, where several members of the Royal Ulster Rifles lie after the Korean War. He stressed the importance of remembering Irish men who died in the name of peace.
He praised the work of Gardaí, Customs, the Naval Service and the Air Corps in arresting drug runners, referring to an operation he said took place in County Kerry and then correcting to Cork. He cited a figure of 30 million euros worth of drugs and commended the services for working together to stop gun runners and drug runners.
He expressed sadness that there is not sufficient naval cover to protect the entire coast and repeated his appreciation for the coordinated work of the security services. He closed his remarks by thanking Cork.

The weekend of the 12th and 13th of July is the weekend of commemoration and remembrance. The Royal British Legion's annual event at Island Bridge takes place on the 12th of July this year, and the Irish commemoration takes place on the Sunday, the 13th of July. As President of the Econic Rangers Association and a former member of the Royal Irish Rangers I will be there and I would encourage people to be there. As a nation we have grown up and we have started to commemorate our fall and several thousand of our countrymen died during the First and Second World War and indeed recently I had a visit from the Korean War cemetery where several members of the Royal Ulster Rifles lie after the Korean War. So it is important that we remember Irish men who died in the name of peace. Finally, I just want to remark on the tremendous work done by our security services, both Gardaí, Customs, the Naval Service, the Air Corps in arresting drug runners down in County Kerry. 30 million euros worth of drugs. Sorry, I think it was Cork, Cork Kerry. What's the difference? But 30 million nonetheless and it is wonderful to see how the security services can work together to stop gun runners and drug runners. The sadness is that we don't have sufficient naval cover to cover the entire coast. Thank you, Cork.
