Conor D McGuinness: Urges Action to Stop Nitrous Oxide Trade
Conor D McGuinness warned that nitrous oxide is being sold online in bulk, trafficked into communities and pushed on children, and called on the government to act. He said the bill would shut down that trade, protect children and give Gardaí the tools they need.
Reported harms
Industrial cans of nitrous oxide are ending up in the hands of teenagers, he said, with young people being told the gas is harmless. Doctors are now treating nerve damage, frostbite and long-term neurological harm, and communities are left dealing with the damage.
Law enforcement challenges
Gardaí are left without clear powers and without a steer, he argued, hampering efforts to disrupt the online bulk sales and trafficking of nitrous oxide.
The proposed bill
He presented the bill as a measure to shut down the trade, protect children and give Gardaí the tools they need to tackle the problem at source.
Government response questioned
He accused the government of "sitting once again on its hands" and asked whether ministers are prepared to act to stop the online supply and protect young people.
