Mattie McGrath Slams Teachta as 'feeble' in Appointment Row

Mattie McGrath Slams Teachta as 'feeble' in Appointment Row

Mattie McGrath criticised a Teachta over an appointment process concerning the Attorney General and said the minister blocked the appointment for eight months. He accused the Teachta of being weakened and blamed party figures for misleading him.

Appointment dispute

McGrath said the dispute was about the appointment process, not impeachment. He told the chamber that the minister blocked the appointment for eight months and referred to the AG at the time as "excellent".

Personal attack on the Teachta

He launched a direct personal critique, calling the Teachta "the most feeble and inept Teachta" he had encountered and accusing Fine Gael of pulling the wool over the Teachta's eyes.

Reference to past comments

McGrath recalled 2017 and earlier comparisons the Teachta had made about that appointment, saying the Teachta had not been kind in the words used at the time.

Tone and implications

The remarks were combative and focused on perceived weakness in the Teachta's position and ongoing manipulation by party actors. The speaker closed with a further aside of commiserations for Sunday.

Teachta, this is what he said, in 2017, I think, he was sitting in that seat, we were illustrating about the appointment of that time, an excellent AG, Maura Whelan, and you weren't very kind in the words you said either on the comparisons you made, Teachta, the real problem here is, as I said, it would not have to do with impeachment, it's this appointment process, and Minister Ross blocked it for eight months, that's common knowledge, Teachta, I think this is more about your weakened position now as Teachta, the most feeble and inept Teachta I've ever met, because you'll be holding the Fine Gael, and your job in that job, and they got this job, they pulled it all over your, wool over your eyes, and they put it every day, and they'll keep pulling it, while you leave him, and by the way, commiserations for Sunday as well.
