Mattie McGrath Demands Flexibility from Minister Chambers
Mattie McGrath urged the Taoiseach to ask Minister Chambers to be more flexible at the Business Committee and criticised time-wasting on the floor of the Chamber. He said the current approach is unfair to deputies and reduces opportunities for proper discussion of policy legislation.
Request to the Taoiseach
Mattie McGrath asked the Taoiseach to request that Minister Chambers show greater flexibility and understanding at Business Committee meetings and to help resolve scheduling and time arrangements as they were handled previously.
Concerns about time on the floor
He criticised the practice of coming into the floor every week only to waste time with questions on policy legislation, saying it is unfair to deputies and a poor use of parliamentary time.
Warning about unaddressed questions
McGrath warned that prolonged sittings achieve little if questions go unanswered, saying they "could be here for two weeks" and the Taoiseach would not answer questions anyway, underscoring frustration with current procedures.
Call for more debate time
He concluded by calling for more time to discuss issues, arguing that deputies need adequate opportunity to debate policy rather than recurrent interruptions and procedural delays.

Our group are unhappy with it too, but coming into the floor every week here and wasting time for questions on policy legislation is very unfair to deputies as well. So I'd ask the Taoiseach to ask Minister Chambers to be more flexible and understanding at Business Committee and try and get things sorted out like we used to and not to have time wasting in the floor of the Chamber here. We could be here for two weeks Taoiseach and you won't answer any questions anyway, so it makes no difference, but we do need more time to discuss these issues.
