Mattie McGrath: Warns of limbo on N24 upgrade funding
Mattie McGrath raised concerns about the stalled N24 upgrade from Limwick to Waterford, saying lead authority Kilkenny County Council received no funding to progress the scheme. He warned that limited funding covers only the care to Limwick Junction stretch, leaving the broader project unadvanced.
Funding shortfall for N24 upgrade
He said there is some limited funding to progress the care to Limwick Junction stretch but no funding was received by Kilkenny County Council, the lead on the Limwick to Waterford upgrade, to advance the project’s design or property work.
Consultants appointed but project in limbo
Consultants have been appointed for the scheme, yet the council is left in limbo over further payments and progressing the consultants’ work and design, preventing continuation of the important upgrade.

He described the road as a very important piece of infrastructure connecting fines, Limerick, right onto Ross Lair, and said the route’s significance has increased especially with Brexit. He emphasised that daily road users find the road terribly dangerous, with many accidents and huge anxiety for the council and motorists.

The matter was identified as for Transport Infrastructure Ireland and the Minister for Transport, and he asked that the minister be asked to provide a reply on progressing the project.

The consultants have been appointed, and the council left a limbo really, with the consultants and further payments of them, and progressing this project, which is a very important piece of infrastructure, connecting fines, Limerick, right onto Ross Lair, especially with Brexit, and it is major disappointing that there is no funding given to progress the work, not the physical work, the property work, consultants and all that design, from care to Waterford, and there is huge anxiety by the council, but moreover by the daily road users who find this road terribly dangerous, a lot of accidents, and it is very understandable. Thanks Deputy, this is a matter for Transport Infrastructure Ireland and the Minister for Transport, so I might ask him to provide you with a reply on it.
