Carol Nolan to Vote No Confidence, Condemns Attacks on Rural Ireland

Carol Nolan spoke in the chamber, announcing she will support her constituents in Leigh Shoffley and vote no confidence in this Government. She criticised government responses to emergency budget demands, rural policy and rising energy costs.

No-confidence and constituency support

Carol Nolan said she will support her constituents in Leigh Shoffley and vote no confidence in this Government, stressing she is beholden to no party and will serve her constituents to the best of her ability.

Calls for emergency budget and measures

She recalled that a motion brought forward in February calling for an emergency budget and a number of emergency measures was shot down, saying attempts to collaborate were met with no political willingness.

Critique of Minister Rhine and turf sales ban

Nolan accused Minister Rhine of attacking rural Ireland on a daily basis and criticised the online commercial ban on sales of turf as ‘‘crazy’’, urging the minister to stop attacking rural people, their culture and their heritage.

Energy concerns and Electric Ireland

She highlighted that Electric Ireland plans to increase bills - citing a 29% rise for gas customers and a 10.9% rise for electricity - and questioned why the minister was not engaging with the company to address these increases.

I will be supporting my constituents in Leigh Shoffley and voting no confidence in this Government. I am beholden to no party here, but I will serve my constituents to the best of my ability. We brought forward a motion here in February, leading the way in opposition, calling for an emergency budget. That was shot down. We also called for a number of emergency measures to be put in place. Again, no collaboration, shot down. We have tried to collaborate, but there appears to be no open door or no political willingness. Minister Rhine, it would serve you a lot better to stop attacking rural Ireland on a daily basis. This crazy carry-on with the online commercial ban on sales of turf. Will you just stop, cop onto yourself and engage with Electric Ireland, who are going to increase electricity bills by 29% for gas customers and by 10.9% from next month for electricity. That's not right, Minister. Why aren't you engaging with Electric Ireland and using your energy in that sense and using your time in that sense to serve the people, instead of attacking rural people all of the time, attacking our culture and our heritage? You haven't a clue. The Green Party have this country running to the ground. There are 12 TDs running the show here. Day, please. The Green Party has this country running to the ground. Thank you, Mr D. Abbott. ilar R beneficiary and R.
