Bríd Smith Demands Progress on Retired Workers Bill
Bríd Smith urged the Tánaiste and Minister English to guarantee progress on the Retired Workers Bill, calling for the measure to be brought to committee and considered in the Oireachtas. She highlighted delays in the Industrial Relations amendment process and demanded clarity for more than 500,000 retired workers.
Call for guarantees
Smith asked the Tánaiste's office and Minister English to provide assurances that attempts will be made to progress the Retired Workers Bill to committee and that the legislation will be aired and attempted to pass through the Oireachtas for the benefit of over 500,000 retired workers.
Delay and timeline
She noted it has been 17 months since a second-stage debate on the Industrial Relations amendment provision and nine months since the Tánaiste's consultation process started, but she said no proposal has yet been produced from the Tánaiste's office or from Minister English in relation to the progress of the bill.
Concern for retired workers
Smith stressed that ageing constituents who are retired workers should not be dismissed, saying they remain stakeholders in how the office acts or fails to act. She argued their response will be shaped by whether the government moves to address the bill.

It has been nine months since the consultation process started by the Thánaiste's office, but not a single proposal has come from that office, either from Minister English or from the Thánaiste, in relation to the progress of this Bill. I want to ask you, the retired workers bill, can you get some guarantees from that office that attempts will be made to progress this bill to committee, and will you give the 500,000 plus retired workers some guarantee that this bill will be aired and will be attempted to pass through the Oireachtas? I know we are all getting older, they are getting older, but they are retired workers, they are not retired voters, and I think it matters how they respond to what your office does or does not do.
