Rose Conway-Walsh urges action on Mayo drinking water crisis

Rose Conway-Walsh urges action on Mayo drinking water crisis

Rose Conway-Walsh raised concerns about households in Mayo lacking drinking water and called for the Tánaiste, Irish Water and Mayo County Council to intervene. She said local campaigners, described in the transcript as "clear analysts", have fought for ten years for clean water and still rely on buckets and barrels.

Households without drinking water

Rose Conway-Walsh highlighted that, on the last sitting of the Dáil of the year, she had to raise the issue of households in Mayo not having drinking water. She said families and campaigners continue to face daily hardship because connections have not been made.

Call for intervention from authorities

She directly asked the Tánaiste to intervene with Irish Water and Mayo County Council to ensure those households are connected and do not have to go around with buckets and barrels to collect water. The speaker urged the relevant bodies to "get their act together" so the problem is resolved in the current era.

Follow-up with the minister on Ciltima

Rose Conway-Walsh said she would speak to the minister about the issue in relation to Ciltima and ask him to engage with Irish Water on the matter. The record notes her intention to raise the specific locality with the minister for action.

Legislation update on Payment of Wages Tips Bill

She also referred to the Payment of Wages Tips Bill, saying it will be published in the next session and that they intend to get it enacted, ideally before the summer tourism season. The comment frames the bill's timing as a priority for the coming months.

Thank you, Cahirleach. I have time to wish everybody a happy Christmas in 30 seconds, but I do anyway. It is unfortunate that on the last session of the Dáil I have to raise the issue of households in Mayo not having drinking water, and I refer in particular to clear analysts who have fought for the last 10 years for clean water. All they want to do is connect it. Thaughnaiste, will you intervene with Irish Water and Mayo County Council and ask them to get their act together so that these people do not have to be going around with buckets and barrels to get water in this day and age? Goermad. I will talk to Minister O'Brien and let him know about the issue in relation to Ciltima and see if he can intervene with Irish Water in that regard. We are on the Payment of Wages Tips Bill that will be published in the next session, and we intend to get it enacted, hopefully before the summer tourism season. Thank you.
