Danny Healy-Rae warns of autism services crisis in Kerry
Danny Healy-Rae raised concerns about services for children in Kerry diagnosed with autism, ADHD and other intellectual disabilities, saying assessments and supports are insufficient and waiting times are too long. He criticised shortages of speech and language therapists, the burden of private assessments, long domiciliary care delays, lack of respite and the closure of Mary of the Angels, and urged ministers to act.
While the numbers continue to increase, he said the services are not readily available, and waiting times for assessments and diagnosis are taking way too long for many families in Kerry.
He highlighted a huge shortage of speech and language therapists. A lot of parents have to go down the route of private assessments for their children, which he said is a huge burden that many families cannot afford.
Applications for domiciliary care and disability supports for children are taking an extended time, he said, adding that respite is effectively non-existent for many families - "We have no respite, hardly any at all."
He raised concerns that Mary of the Angels, established by volunteers and parents over the years, is being closed by stilt, and criticised the unfairness of children having to travel up to county meet, up against the six counties, the border with the six counties to access services.
He directly appealed to ministers to address these problems for people in Kerry, arguing the current service gaps and delays are not fair for affected families.

Mary of the Angels, which was given over voluntary and put in place by many voluntary people, parents and so forth back over the years, is being closed by stilt. Ministers, I want you to address this. It's not fair that children with disabilities have to go up to county meet, up against the six counties, the border with the six counties.
