Mattie McGrath: Calls Garda Numbers 'Manicured', Rural Crisis

Mattie McGrath criticised Garda staffing levels and local policing, saying official numbers had been "manicured" and that communities are losing officers. He highlighted shortages in Timplemore, Tipperary, Carrick, Shure and named Conmel District, Mulderhorn, Kitchean and Cachillacare as areas affected, and urged more Gardaí on the streets.

Staffing figures criticised

McGrath opened by saying the published Garda numbers had been "manicured" and that "we're just not getting the numbers." He warned the situation will deteriorate as personnel leave the force and said historical figures showed the need for better planning.

Local station shortages

He cited specific local impacts: Carrick and Shure now have "three Gardaí now and two Souths," compared with where they used to have 14 Gardaí. He said Conmel District covers Carrick and Shure, Mulderhorn covers that area, and Kitchean covers Cachillacare and surrounding villages.

On-the-ground capacity

McGrath quoted a superintendent who, he said, can have eight Gardaí "on a good day," underlining the limited operational capacity locally. He argued these reduced numbers undermine policing in rural communities.

Community engagement and call for more officers

While acknowledging Gardaí are engaging with communities, including recent outreach to Muslims and travellers, McGrath said such work "isn't going to help in the immediate time." He concluded by pressing for an increase in frontline Gardaí, saying more officers are needed on the streets to address the problem.
