Rose Conway-Walsh: EU Complicit in Gaza, Demands Declaration
Rose Conway-Walsh addressed the session, urging the EU to issue a clear declaration condemning what she called mass slaughter, genocide and the enforced starvation of Palestinians. She said everyone in the room wants the release of hostages and condemns October 7th, but argued that the EU's credibility is deeply damaged by its stance or lack of stance on Gaza.
Demand for a declaration
She called for a formal declaration from the conference condemning the actions in Gaza, saying that without it the gathering should be ashamed and that the EU project’s credibility is at stake.
Hostages and October 7th acknowledged
She opened by stressing that all in the room want the release of hostages and condemn October 7th, but added that that consensus does not justify inaction on the humanitarian crisis.
Accusation of complicity and moral responsibility
She accused the EU of standing back and being complicit in "the mass slaughter and the genocide and the enforced starvation of Palestinians," calling such complicity "absolutely wrong" and invoking her country’s own history of famine.
Criticism of Horizon Project funding
She named the EU Horizon Project and questioned why hundreds of millions are being given to Israel under that programme, asking why such funding has not been stopped.
Call for like-minded states to act
She urged that, if a joint declaration cannot be secured, like-minded states should come together to make a stand, warning that people are losing faith in the EU project because of its response to Gaza.

Thank you for this morning's session. Let me be absolutely clear. Everybody in this room wants the release of the hostages and condemn October 7th, so let's get that out of the way. But the credibility of the EU project is at stake and it is deeply damaged, and we cannot say that we didn't know. So to stand back and be complicit in the mass slaughter and the genocide and the enforced starvation of Palestinians is absolutely wrong. I come from a country that has experienced famine. We know the scars we have generations later, the scars we have from that famine. And yet I sit here and we cannot even come together as a group here to condemn what has happened, to have a declaration from this gathering. It makes me deeply ashamed. We need a declaration from this conference, and if we don't get that declaration, then what does it say about us? In the absence of that, we need for like-minded states to come together to make a stand in what's happening here. We are complicit, and I will name even the EU Horizon Project. Why are we giving hundreds of millions to Israel under that project? Why haven't we stopped it? There's much more that we can do, but people are losing faith in the EU project because of the stance in Gaza, or the lack of a stance. funds that come together are that people are not in harm. Now we are spending 2 hours time..
