Verona Murphy Elected Keown Corle, Pledges Impartial Reform
Verona Murphy delivered her declaration after being elected Keown Corle of Dáil Éireann and the House agreed to her appointment. She pledged to execute the office impartially, maintain constituency services for Wexford, and pursue reforms to make the House more relevant.
Election and declaration
Verona Murphy was confirmed as the successful candidate by secret ballot under Standing Order 7, Paragraph 3 and was put to the House for election as Keown Corle. She made the formal declaration to dutifully and faithfully execute the office, uphold the Constitution and the Standing Orders, and to apply the rules of the House without fear or favour.
Commitments to impartiality and reform
She committed to be fair, impartial, even-handed and even-tempered in the chair and to maintain order while upholding members' rights and privileges. Murphy said she hopes to be a reforming Keown Corle like her predecessor and to make the operations of the House more relevant to day-to-day life for the public.
Constituency service and language pledge
Murphy addressed the people of Wexford, saying her office is open and that normal service will resume after the Christmas holidays, with services to be maintained and improved. She also undertook to improve her Irish to a level commensurate with the office she now holds.
Acknowledgements and next steps
She thanked colleagues in the regional group and those who supported her nomination after it was proposed by Deputy Michael Lowry, and expressed gratitude to her family, her Wexford staff, the clerk Peter Finnegan and the Houses' catering and administrative teams. Murphy closed by thanking the House and moving on to the day's proceedings.

I do solemnly declare that I will duly and faithfully and to the best of my knowledge and ability, execute the office of Keown Corle of Dáil Éireann without fear or favour, apply the rules as laid down by this House in an impartial and fair manner, maintain order and uphold the rights and privileges of members in accordance with the Constitution and the Standing Orders of Dáil Éireann. Thank you. I would like to say a few words. I am humbled, honoured and privileged to serve as Keown Corle of this great State. When it was first proposed to me by Deputy Michael Lowry, if I will consider a nomination from the group as Keown Corle, my initial thought was how it would affect my ability to represent the people of Wexford. And was he serious at all? But having consulted with my team and supporters, they gave me a resounding endorsement and insisted I pursue the nomination. To the people of Wexford, I want to say, my office is open and normal service resumes after the Christmas holidays and will be maintained and improved. To my colleagues in the regional group, it was a pleasure to be part of it. Thank you to my colleagues here today for your support and I undertake to be fair and impartial, to be even-handed and even-tempered in the chair. To the general public, I hope to be a reforming Keown Corle like my predecessor and make the operations of the House more relevant in terms of the way it affects you day to day. I take on board the Commons today and I undertake to improve my Irish to a level that is commensurate with the office I now hold. To my staff in Wexford, a huge thank you for all of your hard work.
