Mattie McGrath urges accountability over potential payment overruns

Mattie McGrath urges accountability over potential payment overruns

Mattie McGrath spoke on 27 May 2020 about maintaining payments while warning of a potential overrun in demand and calling for clear accountability and a ministerial briefing. He urged that payments should not be delayed or denied, but that decisions must be informed by proper oversight.

Payments continuity

The deputy said all payments should be continued in the normal course of events and stressed the importance of ensuring people receive what they are due.

Overrun risk and fiscal caution

He warned the measure could become a "huge overrunner" in need or demand and emphasised the need to understand the scale of the financial exposure before proceeding further.

Call for accountability and a ministerial briefing

He demanded accountability and asked for the Minister to provide a proper briefing so legislators know exactly where they are going and can judge the proposals by clear information.

We all want to ensure that all payments are continued in the normal course of events, but this is a huge, would probably be a huge overrunner need or demand, we all understand that, and we need to have accountability, we need to have the Minister and a proper briefing that we know exactly where we're going, I mean we're putting the cat before the horse here, very much so, and it's just not fair, and it's not right, I don't think that you understand where we're coming from in this issue, we don't want to delay it, and we don't want to deny anybody payments, but we want to see where we're going, and cut our thought according to measure, and understand what we're doing.
