Mattie McGrath urges funding top-up after Tipperary flood damage

Mattie McGrath urges funding top-up after Tipperary flood damage

Mattie McGrath raised concerns about recent severe weather, road damage and heavy freight traffic in Tipperary, urging the minister to provide extra funding for drainage and to meet Tipperary County Council. He also pressed for action on a ring road to remove trucks from Tipperary Town.

Meeting with the minister

He thanked the minister for a meaningful meeting with local groups, naming Jobs for Tip, March for Tip, Cousin and Mayeroy and the Tipperary Town Chamber, and asked that collaboration continue on the ring road issue to get trucks out of the town.

Flood damage and funding request

He described huge bad weather in the last 10 days that badly hit Nock Mill, the Downs and the Galtys, saluted outdoor and engineering staff for their work, and requested extra funding as a top-up to deal with outbursts of water, flooding and drainage damage.

Roads programme and spending

The minister noted the recently signed roads programme contains significant $600 plus million spending, with a marked increase for repairs and maintenance, and said he would check for any local problems caused by the recent weather.

Local traffic and ring road

McGrath highlighted clear problems in Tipperary Town caused by the volume of freight traffic and reiterated the need for a ring road to divert trucks away from the town centre.

Minister, at first instance I want to thank you for your meeting last Friday night with the Tipperary groups and a very meaningful meeting with the Jobs for Tip, March for Tip, Cousin and Mayeroy and indeed the Tipperary Town Chamber. They really appreciate it. I hope you continue the collaboration in an effort to get the trucks out of the town with a ring road. Minister, we had a huge bad weather in the last 10 days in Tipperary and the areas of Tipperary care and cashless, the Nock Mill Downs and the Galtys were badly hit. I want to salute the outdoor staff and engineering staff, but we need extra funding to deal with this real big outburst of water and flooding cause huge damage. We need money for drainage. We acknowledge the funding, we got the annual funding, but we need a top-up. If you could look at it, please. And if you might meet the Tipperary Councils regarding the request that they have for a meeting with you too, please. But thank you again for your meaningful involvement and look forward to the future. Thank you very much, Deputy. I hope I didn't get myself or anyone else into trouble. I found the meeting very useful and I will commit to meeting Tipperary County Council as well on the issue. The meeting was the issue of roads and I suppose I was particularly interested in my own routes in that neck of the woods and in the real clear problems that exist in Tipperary Town, particularly because of the volume of freight traffic heading through it. But the roads program that we set off there two or three weeks ago, we signed off on it, has significant $600 plus million spending in it. I will look to see if there's any instance where there's weather conditions cause a particular local problem, but in my mind, it is well provisioned. We have a significant increase spending, particularly for the repairs and maintenance for a steady state condition of our roads. So, but I look forward to meeting the Tipperary Council on the similar local issues. Deputy Deputy Thomas Pringle. You
