Mattie McGrath urges action after Carrigan Shure plant closure

Mattie McGrath urges action after Carrigan Shure plant closure

Mattie McGrath warned about the closure of Cármán Malókha, which will leave 31 people unemployed at the plant in Carrigan Shure. He urged the Minister for Enterprise to engage with the company to try to save the jobs, seek alternative uses for the site, and secure a package for staff.

Closure and job losses

Cármán Malókha announced on Friday that it was closing its company. The plant was described as formerly owned by Seltipari Farmers, Avon Moor and Dan Bia, and now part of a consortium of German or Belgian interests and an Irish company, Teal Lawn, with 31 jobs remaining at the site.

Request for ministerial engagement

McGrath asked colleagues to press the Minister for Enterprise to deal directly with the company and to try to engage with them to see if the jobs can be saved. He called for intervention to explore other uses for the plant and to consider the site as an important location for the town.

Local impact and community concern

He warned that Carrigan Shure and the surrounding area have been decimated by job losses over the years and said this closure is a "final straw" for the town. McGrath highlighted the plant's long history, noting an excellent workforce and operations spanning decades, in some cases over half a century.

Response and proposed next steps

A responding member said they would ask the minister to engage with the company to see what could be done to save jobs, to make sure a package is put in place for staff if possible, and to explore alternative uses for the site. McGrath urged urgent intervention to try to stave off the closure and protect the local economy.

Cármán Malókha announced on Friday that they were closing their company. This was formerly a Malókha, owned by Seltipari Farmers, Avon Moor, Dan Bia. It is now a consortium of German, I think, or Belgian, and Teal Lawn, an Irish company, 31 jobs remaining at the plant, excellent jobs, excellent workforce over the decades, and over a half century, when I know it. I am asking you to ask the Minister for Enterprise to deal with the company here and to try and engage with them, to see if these jobs can be saved, to see what other uses can be put to this plant, to discuss this on the main end for a good location, and the town of Carrigan Shure, and indeed that area of February, has been decimated with job losses over the years, and this is a final straw for Malókha. I know that the people that have caused that in Carrigan Shure are doing their best to develop the town, but we need these kind of flagship industries, they are there for decades, and we need some intervention to see if it is now for June, can it be staved off? Thank you. T-shirt, Chris. Thanks, Stephanie. I am very sorry to hear about that closure as well, and the loss of jobs in Carrigan Shure. I know your colleague, Senator Hearns, has been on to me about this too. I will ask Minister Coveney to engage with the company, to see what can be done, perhaps to save the jobs, to make sure that a package is put in place for the staff if possible, and also to see if an alternative use can be found for the site. Thank you.
