Mattie McGrath demands immediate bypass for Tipperary town
Mattie McGrath urged urgent action to deliver a bypass for Tipperary town, saying the town is ‘‘choked with lorries, trucks, sorry, no, cars and vehicles’’ and cannot wait. He called for funding and delivery of a relief road linked to the N24 and praised local campaigners and councillors who have campaigned on the issue.
Call for immediate bypass
The deputy said Tipperary town needs a bypass and it cannot wait, stressing the town ‘‘cannot expand’’ and is suffering from congestion. He repeated that a relief road should be prioritised to relieve traffic and allow the town to develop.
Traffic, pollution and health concerns
McGrath highlighted heavy traffic and fumes in the town - ‘‘cars and vehicles, and fumes and pollution’’ - arguing that congestion is choking the town and creating environmental problems. He presented the bypass as necessary to address pollution and protect local quality of life.
Local campaigners and councillors acknowledged
He praised groups such as March for Tipperary and local figures including Councillor Henry Ryan for their campaigning, noting March for Tipperary had disbanded after their efforts. He also thanked local staff and officials for their support in raising the issue.
Political engagement and ministerial attention
The deputy said that deputies including Jackie Cahill have raised the bypass and that ministers have visited the area. He indicated the minister is ‘‘conscious of it’’ and suggested some ministers are more disposed to bypass projects for towns like Tipperary.
Funding and delivery questions
McGrath urged that funding be secured and work delivered, referencing a proposal tied to the N24 and expressing frustration that the project has languished for years. He pressed for a positive outcome and continued engagement with deputies to move the scheme forward.

Teacher, the old song is A Long Way to Tipperary. Tipperary town needs a bypass, and it cannot wait and wait and wait and languish. They need a relief road, because the town is choked with lorries, trucks, sorry, no, cars and vehicles, and fumes and pollution, God knows. And March for Tipperary, jobs for Tipperary, the Chamber, and everybody there, Councillor Henry Ryan, doing their best. March for Tipperary have disbanded, they did a great job, and I salute them. But we need a positive outcome, and to get funding, to build this on the roof of the N24, and we need that in Tassel 25 years ago. Why can't it be done for Tipperary? Your ministers have visited, like McGrann, all those, you've visited yourself several times. It has to happen, it cannot languish, because it can't expand, it's on the route from Waterford 2 to Tipperary, to the west, to Main Attery, and it has to be delivered. So please, Tarnish, try and get something done for this town. I thank the deputy for raising that, I know that Deputy Jackie Cahill and all the deputies in Tipperary have raised this issue. I know Minister Eamon Ryan is conscious of it too, and it seems to be more disposed to bypasses of towns like Tipperary Town. And so certainly that's one I'm keeping an eye on, and we'll continue to engage with the deputies in respect of this particular issue. Thank you very much.
